Standby Emergency Treatment for Malaria instead of Malaria pills

While looking up the malaria threat in the countries we are visiting, for example Cambodia and Laos. We were wondering if we should take or not take malaria medication. We will be in malaria invested countries for over three to four months. The only option of malaria medication then are the ones with the biggest site effects (psychoses).

Further research shown that in most of the countries malaria can be avoided unless you are going into the bush bush. Except for Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. Added up, three plus months of taking pills. We have asked a doctor if there was any other option. The thing he said was, Standby emergency treatment for Malaria (SBET). A fairly new concept for Malaria treatment. A new course for us.

This kit ,SBET, contains the same pills you would get in a hospital and provide extra time to travel to a hospital. This means we are able to travel without taking pills and the side-effects. This is a big plus to me personally. Also the malaria pills don't cover the risk 100% and the chance of actually getting stung by a malaria infected mosquito are quite low, lots of people actually state that the side effects may be more severe then the actual stung of a malaria mosquito.

What to pack in your backpack?

Fun-fact: Less as possible

To be continued ;)
